Bitter kola nut is the seed of Garcinia kola, a tree that grows across the rainforest belt of West and Central Africa. It is not the same as kola nut, which comes from a different tree (Cola acuminata and Cola nitida).

How bitter kola nut is used
In many Nigerian homes bitter kola is offered to guests, broken and shared, alongside kola nut. Plenty of people simply chew the whole nut, slowly. It can also be grated into soups and stews where a bitter note is wanted. For cooking, the powder is easier to measure. Store bitter kola nut somewhere cool, dry and dark, in a closed container.
