Search for bitter kola benefits and you will find long lists of cures. We sell bitter kola, and we are not going to give you one. Here is what bitter kola is, how people really use it, and what the research does and does not show.
What bitter kola is
Bitter kola is the seed of the Garcinia kola tree, which grows in the rainforest belt of West and Central Africa. In Yoruba it is orogbo, in Igbo aku ilu, in Hausa miji goro, and in French speaking West Africa petit cola. See bitter kola in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and French.
It is not the same as kola nut, which comes from a different tree. Read bitter kola vs kola nut.
What bitter kola is used for
Hospitality
In many Nigerian homes, bitter kola is offered to guests. It is served whole and unpeeled on a plate, and each guest peels their own.
Chewing
Many people simply chew it. The taste is sharply bitter at first, with a sweetness that comes up behind it. See how to eat bitter kola.
Cooking and drinks
Ground bitter kola goes into pepper soup, stews, marinades and drinks. Read bitter kola uses in the kitchen and the recipe for bitter kola tea.
What the research says
Scientists have studied Garcinia kola for decades, mostly in laboratories and in animals.
- A 2023 review in Phytochemistry Reviews (Tauchen and colleagues) found that the effects reported so far have been seen only in animal models. The authors say human clinical trials are still needed. Read the review.
- A 2022 review in Advances in Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Dogara and colleagues) says the safety and efficacy of Garcinia kola “have not been wholly assessed in humans.”
So when a website promises that bitter kola will treat a condition, it is going further than the science. We sell bitter kola as a food, and we make no health claims about it.
Can you eat bitter kola every day?
There is no official daily amount for bitter kola. Treat it like any strong flavor: a little goes a long way. If you are pregnant, nursing, take medication or have a health condition, check with your doctor first.
Bitter kola and honey
Some people pair bitter kola with honey to soften the bitter edge. It is a matter of taste. In a cup of bitter kola tea, a spoon of honey works well.
Does bitter kola make you sleepy, or keep you awake?
We have not found human research that answers this, so we will not guess. If you are thinking of the nut known for caffeine, that is kola nut, a different nut from a different tree.
